Mental health support for international students in the Netherlands

Starting as an international student in the Netherlands sounds like fun and could be a great learning experience in many ways. Not only because of the study you follow, also because of the multicultural environment in the Netherlands. However, somethimes it can result in a cultural shock, homesickness, stress, depression and other psychological problems.

A culture shock is not quite as shocking or as sudden as you might expect. It usualy is part of the process of learning to live in and adapt to a new culture in a country you are new to. Upon arrival you may find the new situation exhilarating and exciting, but as time passes you may start to feel overwhelmed and frustrated. Your experiences may go from being interesting to sometimes being irritating. This kind of disorientation is normal after arriving in a new culture. This does not necessarily mean that you will need professional help, but if these problems begin to affect your studies and personal life, you can always ask the counselors for help.

Most of your personal, academic, relationship or identity problems can be addressed through counselling and mental health therapy. These include:

  • Lack of concentration
  • Fear of failure
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Sexual problems
  • Eating disorders
  • Addictions
  • Family and/or relationship difficulties.
Mental health therapy for international students

Our private practice for international students will offer you a warm and caring place to build skills and enhance your personal growth. Mental health therapy is a guided process of self-discovery. Whether it begins in response to a traumatic event or at a time when positive change is sought, old patterns of behavior and thinking can stand in the way of healthy communication, behavior and feelings. Our customised therapy provides you with access to strengthen your skills, so that new and healthier thoughts, feelings and behaviors take the place of old unhealthy ones.

At HelloDoc Health we provide counseling and therapy in English, Bulgarian, Dutch and Italian.

Your doctor can refer you to a psychologist or psychiatrist at HelloDoc Health. Conversations with a psychologist can be very effective against depression. The psychologist takes the time to find out what your complaints are and tries to find a solution for your problems together with you.

Insured mental health consults for international students

Psychological treatment at HelloDoc Health can be (partly or fully) covered by your Dutch basic health insurance depending on your insurance package. Please contact your health insurance to check which percentage of therapy will be covered.

Counseling consults or therapy can also be covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and if you have an international health policy with AON Student InsuranceCigna HealthBupaAxa Global HealthcareGeoBlueAllianz or another major international health insurer, then in most cases your consults and therapy at HelloDoc Health will be fully covered via reimbursement. Usually 7 to 12 consults will be covered by your international health insurer.

Except for AON Student Insurance, we have chosen not to have contracts with health insurance companies. This means that you will initially need to pay for the mental health treatment yourself and provide the invoice to your insurance, who will reimburse you according to your insurance policy. We work according to the NZA rules (Nederlandse Zorgautoriteit).
